Highway Patrol responds to hit-and-run accident
A 60-year-old Eastpoint man, driving a pickup truck just south of Fountain in Bay County, struck a motorcycle Friday morning, leaving the cyclist with critical injuries.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, the Eastpoint man was behind the wheel of a silver pick-up, ust before 11 a.m., heading north on U.S. 23 and preparing to make a left turn near State Route 20. The cyclist, a man in his 30s, was traveling south on U.S. 231, near State Route 20.
“The driver of the silver colored pickup did not observe the motorcycle already in the travel lane while making a left turn,” read the FHP report.
The front of the motorcycle struck the front right of the pickup truck., which caused the cycle to leave the roadway into the center median and continue to travel into the north lanes of U.S. 231 before it came to rest on the east shoulder.
“The pickup truck continued from the scene and traveled into Calhoun County on State Road 20,” read the release. “At this time the vehicle has been located as well as the driver.”
The report said the driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
